Founded by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan in the 7th Century A.D., Ajmer became a favorite residence of the great Moghula. One of the first contacts between the Moghula and the British occurred in Ajmer when Sir Thomas Roe met with Jahangir here in 1616. The city was subsequently taken by the Scindias and, in 1818, it was handed over to the British, becoming one of the few places in Rajasthan controlled directly by British rather than being part of a princely state. Ajmer has a blend of Sufi culture and Hindu religion. Ajmer is a main tourist destination because of its historical and spiritual importance and the neighboring holy village of Pushkar. It is a centre of culture and education. Today, Ajmer is known as a famous pilgrimage city for the Hindus as well as Muslims. The famous Dargah Sharif of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti (Rh.) located at Ajmer is equally visited by the Hindus and Muslims. Alwar was an ancient Rajput state, known for its rich natural heritage, beautiful lakes and valleys. This city was formerly known as 'Mewar?, the people of the state did not accept any external interference?s and daringly resisted against foreign invasions. In the 12th and 13th centuries they formed a group and raided Delhi. But finally Sultan Bulban (1267 A.D. - 1287 A.D.) suppressed them, bringing the area under the Muslims rule. Maharaja Pratap Singh, a Kuchhwaha Rajput belonging to the clan of Jaipur?s rulers, won back Alwar In 1771 A.D. and founded a principality of his own. Situated between small hills of the Aravali range Alwar is 170 km from Delhi and 150 km from Jaipur. Alwar is also known for its finest wild life sanctuary in Sariska.

Maharaja Suraj Mal founded Bharatpur in 1733 AD. The city is named after Bharat, the brother of Lord Ram. The trio of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur has played an important part in the history of Rajasthan.Bharatpur was the major Jat State in Rajasthan. Badan Singh established and founded the fort and palaces of Deeg in 1725. Seven years later, his son laid the foundation nearby of the fort of Bharatpur. Lohagarh fort is one of the main attractions of Bharatpur. This magnificent 18th century fort was built by Raja Suraj Mal. Bharatpur is better known to the world for the Keoladeo National Park or bird sanctuary, a unique bird place. Bharatpur is considered as the Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan.

Bikaner was established by a Rathore Prince Rao Bikaji in 1488 AD. He was a descendent of the founder of Jodhpur (1459 A.D.), Rao Jodhaji. Rao Jodhaji had five sons but Rao Bikaji was the most enterprising of them. Bikaji chose a barren wilderness called ?Jangladesh? and trandormerd it to an impressive city, called Bikaner after the founder? name. Bikaner is located in North West part of Rajasthan. The City is called the camel country; and famous for the best riding camels in the world. It has magnificent forts, palaces, and beautiful temples, signifying the rich heritage. This gorgeous city known not only for its fairs and festivals, picnics and outings, temples and Havelies, kite flying and its proud and fearless people but also for their ornaments, colorful costumes, sheep?s wool, camel races, and awesome sunset. Famous for its medieval forts, Havelis and palaces, Bundi is situated 36 km from Kota. It was ruled by Hada Chauhans. In 1193 A.D. when Prithviraj Chauhan was defeated by Sultan Mohammed Ghauri, some Chauhan nobles seeked shelter in Mewar and became allies to the Rana while other young warriors move towards the Chambal valley and overpowered the Meena and Bhil tribals-thus establishing their own kingdom of Hadoti. Later, two branches of Hadas formed two separates states of Kota and Bundi, on either side of the river Chambal. Bundi is surrounded by the Aravalli hills. This historical town is famous for its intricate paintings and murals.
